Welcome to FedStar Credit Union

FedStar Credit Union has been serving its members since 1961. Chartered by the State of Texas as a credit union for federal employees who lived, worked, or were supervised from Brazos County, we have recently expanded our field of membership, allowing us to serve the community as a whole.

At FedStar, we strive to provide our members with the best service possible. Why? Because when you join FedStar, you’re not just another nameless customer, you’re part owner. We want to ensure you receive the best financial advice, products, and service available. This means, as a not-for-profit institution, we return any profits earned back to you, our member-owners, in the form of lower loan interest rates, higher dividends, and higher rates on investments.

As a full-service credit union, we offer a variety of accounts tailored to fit your financial needs. Our friendly staff is dedicated, knowledgeable, and willing to answer any questions you may have about products, services, accounts, loan types, or membership.

You can also rest easy in the knowledge that once you join FedStar, you remain a member for life, no matter where you move or work. And don’t forget, if you qualify for membership, your immediate family does too. So why wait any longer to experience the benefits of credit union membership? Call today to begin your relationship with us!

FedStar’s History

In 1961, ten employees from the United State Post Office and the United States Department of Agriculture each made an investment to purchase a share of ownership in the newly chartered credit union called Brazos County Federal Employees Credit Union. This credit union was established by its members to serve the federal employees from USPS, USDA, SSA, FAA, and other federal agencies in or supervised from Brazos County.

In 2002, the credit union wanted to broaden its exposure and create a more easily recognizable name. The credit union sought member involvement and the name was changed to FedStar Credit Union. In 2005, the credit union was approved for a community charter, allowing a shift to permit anyone who lives, works, worships or goes to school in the 10 mile radius of our location to become a member of the credit union.

In 1961, the credit union was run by volunteers out of the home of the Treasurer. It later moved to office space in the Dulie Bell Building on the campus of Texas A & M University. As it grew in membership it also grew in deposits. The credit union later relocated to a small space in the USDA building on Texas Avenue. After consistent growth, it out grew its offices and after a short period in rented space on University Drive. The credit union purchased its own building at 701 Harvey Road in December of 2009. After extensive renovation, FedStar opened its doors to members on July 19, 2010.

Today, FedStar Credit Union serves over 2200 members with assets exceeding $18,000,000. FedStar looks forward to serving all members now and in the future.

The Credit Union Difference

Not-for-Profit: Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, and we exist to serve our members, not to make a profit. Unlike most other financial institutions, we do not offer stock or pay dividends to outside stockholders. Instead, earnings are returned to members in the form of lower loan and credit card rates, higher interest on deposits, and lower fees.

Volunteer Board of Directors: Each credit union is governed by a volunteer board of directors, elected by and from the credit union’s membership.

Social Purpose: People Helping People:  Credit unions exist to help people, not to make a profit. Our goal is to serve each of our members well, including those of modest means because every member counts. Our members are fiercely loyal for this reason. They know their credit union will be there for them in bad times, as well as good. It’s this same people-first philosophy which spurs credit unions and our employees to get involved in community charitable activities and worthwhile causes. If you have a community event that’s in need of sponsorship, let us know about it!

Notice to members interested in Board Positions

FedStar Credit Union has an all-volunteer Board of Directors made up of 7 credit union members. These directors are elected by a democratic vote by the general membership at the credit union’s Annual Meeting, held in April of each year. The board members, once elected, serve a term of 3 years. FedStar Credit Union's Board of Directors serves as unpaid volunteers, contributing their time and talent to further the goals of the credit union.

The directors lend their financial and managerial expertise to help guide the direction of the credit union and fulfill its mission of service to members. The election of board members rotates annually, and each year either two or three board member seats are up for election.

Board members are responsible for setting policies, approving budgets, and helping to direct strategic planning. They evaluate operations and maintain financial performance standards for the credit union. They are also responsible for appointing the credit union's President/CEO, who reports directly to the Board.

Our Annual Report

As a credit union, we believe in transparency where all financial matters are concerned. This is why, at the beginning of each calendar year, we host our Annual Meeting. Open to all members, the Annual Meeting comprises a short business meeting followed by an evening of dinner with games and prizes. This is also the time when we present to you, our member-owners, our Annual Report, a compilation of financial reports, such as statement of financial condition and profit and expenditures. We want you to feel secure about the safety of FedStar as a financial institution, and trust that we are doing our very best to ensure the stability continues for years to come.

The Credit Union Philosophy

‘Not for profit, not for charity, but for service’: In 1935 when credit unions were helping Americans through the Great Depression, the treasurer of a Midwestern credit union coined the phrase ’not for profit, not for charity, but for service,’ a philosophy that holds true today.

Credit unions continuously look out for their members’ interests and provide a level of service that is not generally available at other financial institutions. Whether it’s providing a loan to help a member cover unexpected medical bills, giving financial counseling to a member whose company closed its doors, or simply offering a better deal on a used car loan, credit unions make a difference for their member and the communities they serve. FedStar, a member of the Bryan/College Station community since 1961, is proud to be a part of this strong tradition of member service.
